“omicron arena” originally started life not as a web site but as a game server. My first attempt at providing a full time service on the internet was a Quake 3 server being run on a dual processor machine I built for home server duties. The server name was omicron, so the logical name for the Quake 3 arena was “omicron arena”.

Later I expanded the game server and several co-workers joined in the combat. As a means to both share stats and expand my knowledge of servers, services and so on I set up a stats page which was generated via a cron job on the server nightly from the days matches. As this became more and more popular with our small group a reliable means for accessing the data was required as being a home internet user my IP was not the best choice. Of course everyone asked for the site URL, to which I had to respond with numbers which only confuses most people, so I registered the domain name and had it pointed to the house and my server. Thus the site “omicron arena” was born.

The game server remained up and running for several years, even though users tapered off . Things gradually were added to the site such as a news section and photos which I wanted to share with others. As the gaming tapered off more and more and the news and photos increased the sites focus changed pretty much on its own.

At some point the gamers stopped using the server so the focus became more of a personal site & family site. That focus has continued on to this day. The site has had its ups and downs (like the last year or so after being hacked) but it is still here and will hopefully be here for a long time to come.

The fog….

The line “Don’t fear the fog” came to life after a death match in Quake 3 in an arena that was filled with fog. Several users began to express a dislike for this map since it was difficult to see and the size was rather small so the action was extremely fast in most cases. The server was set up on random rotation of maps and when this one would come up it was regular to get a few requests to change. Of course those who did not have a dislike for this map started to taunt the others saying they were afraid of the fog. This in turn lead to the saying “don’t fear the fog” when maps and this map in particular were being discussed.
